Looking for a small tree to plant in your garden? Look no further!
Frangipani (Plumeria ruba) also known as Hawaian Lei flower, is found in warm tropical areas in the Caribbean, South and Central America, Mexico and the Pacific Islands. These multi-branched trees are an adornment in any garden.
Frangipani grows approximately16ft tall. They are unique for their fragrant clusters of colourful, bright, waxy and long-lasting flowers. They are highly scented during the night and are often used in bouquets and garlands. In Hawaii they are often used to make garlands to welcome visitors to the islands.
Frangipani can be divided into two main groups: the Obtusa and the Ruba. The obtusa plumeria has rounded shiny leaves while the ruba has duller pointed leaves. The obtusa frangipani is the one with white flowers and a strong fragrance, while the ruba has colourful flowers but less scent. The colours vary from white, to yellow, pink, red and various pastels.
Plant frangipani in fast-draining soil in full sun. You should prune it so it retains its shape and the plant is kept intact. Use a slow release type fertilizer (Osmocote) to provide a source of nutrients, and you would be rewarded with many blooms.
Recently, around six frangipani trees of various colours were planted in the compound of Brickdam Cathedral to beautify it. Sadly, all six plants just disappeared one morning!
Note: Frangipani branches, leaves and flower stalks produce a poisonous milk-white latex. At all costs you must avoid contact with the eyes.
