Police apprehended the main suspect in the murder of GTM Director Lionel Bert Whyte during a search of a mini-bus at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway on Saturday last.
The man had been on the run since May 14 when he allegedly stabbed Whyte several times about the body and drove away with his car. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
When contacted, yesterday, the relatives of Whyte said that they are very happy at the news. “We are elated that the police found him however, we only learnt of that from Inews website and we are still awaiting official confirmation from the police,” said Whyte’s sister, Mary Whyte.
“From the beginning we had faith in the Police investigation and we know that everything takes time and now that they have caught this man we have to thank them for their diligence and hard work from the inception and we also have to thank God because without him none of this would ever happen,” she added.
Mary Whyte said that when the family receives official confirmation from the police they will plan a “big thanksgiving” to give their praises to God and to pray for justice.
Whyte, 45, of 79 Phoenix Park, West Bank Demerara left his Robb and Hincks streets office sometime after 6 pm on May 14 in his car. Around 8 pm, he collapsed in front of a popular nightspot on Main Street some five corners from his workplace.
He was reportedly seen in his car with another male in a heated argument in the vicinity of Queen and Bentinck streets and was later seen running out of Hope Street by a security guard at the nightspot where he collapsed.
Persons in the area where he was found said they had never seen him there before.
Whyte’s murder came as a shock to many particularly the acting fraternity and the West Demerara Lions Club.
