The state of the city makes a mockery of the thrust for tourism

Dear Editor,

Welcome to Guyana and the Garbage City of Georgetown.

This was my greeting during my recent visit back home, and to say I was shocked would be putting it mildly. How the powers-that-be could allow our city to fall apart in such a short space of time is troublesome and serious steps should be taken to remedy the situation.

I would like to suggest that an immediate ban be put on all styrofoam products and plastic bags, and a purchase/refund fee be placed on plastic bottles.  This will give the social rejects a chance to clean up the place and receive an income for their habits.

Rules and regulations must then be strictly enforced and community service must be mandatory for defaulters.  The state of our city is a disgrace to all Guyanese and makes a mockery of the thrust for tourism.

Yours faithfully,
Jai Dindyal
