The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment on Wednesday handed over a Global Positioning System (GPS) to the Guyana Women Miners Organisation (GWMO) at the Sea Breeze Hotel, Kitty, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said in a press release.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Robert Persaud presented the equipment to Simona Broomes, President of the GWMO, on behalf of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
A few miners benefitted from earlier training sessions held to enlighten them on the effective use of the GPS technology and more training sessions will be held for all miners.
The information that would have been uploaded to the device costs close to $750,000 and the gesture is indicative of the ministry’s support for miners, even as Minister Persaud alluded to other plans for the GWMO.
“This is another indication of our support for your organisation,” he is quoted by GINA as saying.
Other plans include allocating a plot of land to the organisation in Region Eight and training in the use of heavy-duty equipment.
Persaud also met with Broomes to resolve mining concerns that are prevalent, including titled areas, GGMC’s capability of proper monitoring, impact of the Linden protest on mining and the available interventions that can be put to use.
Broomes expressed her organisation’s gratitude to the minister, the release said.
