The junior and senior Suriname draughts teams made a clean sweep of their Guyanese counterparts when the Goodwill series between the two countries ended recently at the Providence National Stadium.
In the senior team event the Surinamese prevailed by two matches to one winning the opening match on Friday, losing the following day and winning the decider on Sunday.
The Surinamese junior team won all three of the matches played against the Guyanese.
Guyana’s Khemraj Pooranmall who played unbeaten in the team event was declared the most outstanding senior player.
And, in an individual 10-minute per game blitz tournament Guyana’s Jairam (only name) emerged triumphant proving too strong for the Dutch players.
He was awarded a trophy sponsored by BB Trading of Suriname.
Despite their defeat in the team event, Guyana’s Q. Heyliger won the junior blitz tournament.
At the closing ceremony Consular Officer in the Suriname Embassy in Guyana, Tjark Olivieira, urged the Guyanese to play the game more like their counterparts.
President of the GDA, Jairam, in response, thanked the participants for their efforts adding that the exchanges of games will help to foster closer ties between the neighboring countries.
Draughts instructor of Suriname Mr. Basdewsing presented a game clock to the GDA among other useful instruments for beginners.
