Chess players Taffin Khan, Kriskal Persaud, Ronuel Greenidge and Anthony Drayton will contest the final four playoffs of the Red Cherry chess tournament today following the conclusion of the final preliminary round at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club on Thursday.
Matches will commence at 10am at the new location on Camp Street Avenue, between Lamaha and New Market Streets. The outdoor venue is the scene of the fast-paced competition which began in July with the first of six preliminary rounds.
National champion Khan rebounded from a poor start where he lost to junior player Saeed Ali to capture the first place trophy, a cash prize and a Red Cherry voucher while Drayton and Persaud were second and third respectively. The total accumulated points of the top four players after the six preliminary rounds were Khan with 94 points, Persaud 77, Greenidge 76 and Drayton 68.
However, the points gained in the preliminary rounds would not be added to today’s final.
The winner of the playoffs will receive $50,000 cash plus $50,000 in Red Cherry vouchers. The runner up will receive $10,000 cash plus $15,000 worth in Red Cherry vouchers with the third place finisher getting $5,000 cash plus $10,000 Red Cherry vouchers and the fourth place finisher a Red Cherry voucher worth $5,000.
In addition, the top four players will each receive a trophy.
