Four days after he was struck down on his bicycle by a pick-up owned by the Region Six Regional Democratic Council (RDC), 14-year-old Ryan Benjamin, is still clinging to life as he remains in an unconscious state in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Benjamin was hit while riding on the No. 45 Village, Public Road.
His father, Edward Benjamin, had told this newspaper that he sustained injuries to his skull, spinal cord and his left hand, which is broken.
The child’s relatives along with relatives of the driver who hit him were present at the hospital yesterday to visit him.
The driver of the pick-up, which carries licence plate number PPP 2606, is an RDC employee who is currently in police custody and is expected to be bailed today.
Benjamin was on his way back home from a nearby wedding house, where he had gone to deliver a message to his father when he was hit.
The driver, a witness said, tried to apply brakes but was unable to do so and hit the boy, who eventually landed on the windscreen of the pick-up.
A woman, with assistance from the driver, put the boy into a car and rushed him to the Skeldon Public Hospital.
He was later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital after his condition worsened.
