Dear Editor,
I was very saddened to read of the death of Hugh Cholmondeley in New York.
He was an urbane, wise and intelligent man who was always good company.
I still remember the lovely story he told me of how the dictator Forbes Burnham rang him after a run-in and said “Comrade, this country is not big enough for the two of us and I am not leaving.”
Hugh was at Timehri on a plane out that evening!
Guyana misses Grey Beards like him.
RIP
Yours faithfully,
John ‘Bill Cotton’ Mair
