BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Twelve wickets tumbled on the second day here yesterday to leave the fourth round clash of the Regional Under-19 Championship between Guyana and Windward Islands an open affair heading into today’s final day.
Predictably, the Windwards took first innings points after carrying their overnight 127 for three to 200 all out, in response to Guyana’s first day 147 all out at Queen’s Park.
At the close, Guyana were 167 for five in their second innings, an overall lead of 114 runs.
The Windwards were perhaps hoping for a bigger lead but their mainstay Gabriel could add only nine to his overnight 71, before he was the second wicket of the day to fall.
He struck eight fours and three sixes, in an innings lasting 128 balls and 137 minutes.
Roland Cato, unbeaten on one at the start, was the first to depart for six before Gabriel drove leg-spinner and captain Shawn Pereira to mid-on at 141 for five.
Pereira was the best bowler with five for 71 while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai took four for 70.
Once Gabriel left, the innings lost momentum with the last six wickets falling for 59 runs.
Batting again, Guyana were unsteady at 44 for two after losing opener Brian Sattaur to a catch at gully off left-arm spinner Larry Edward and Shimron Hetmeyer bowled by Ray Jordan, both for 20.
However, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Chandrapaul Hemraj combined in a 61-run third wicket stand to prop up the innings.
While Chanderpaul stroked three fours in 26, Hemray counted three fours and one six in scoring 40 off 83 balls in 105 minutes.
Left-arm seamer Preston McSween (2-51) ended the stand when he bowled Chanderpaul and then also got Hemraj caught at slip.
