One of the survivors of Sunday’s Lima Public Road, Essequibo accident was thrown into further shock after yesterday discovering that she had lost her unborn child as a result.
Claire Gildharie, 35, of Charity, Essequibo Coast, was one of the eight persons who suffered injuries after the accident involving a minibus and a car, which claimed the life of 34-year-old Padmawattie ‘Rida’ Kumarie.
A relative of Gildharie yesterday told Stabroek News that the young mother of one was not aware that she was pregnant until several tests were done on the evening of the accident by doctors of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). She was yesterday informed that she had suffered a miscarriage.
“She de suspect that she was pregnant but she never confirmed it… only now she know when she find out she lost the baby,” the relative said.
She further stated that of all survivors, Gildharie’s case is described as the most severe, noting that the woman’s right leg is broken in three places while her left is broken in a single place. “She is not doing so well… They strap from her hip right down,” the relative explained. She added that she also suffered injuries to her pelvic area and abdomen. “She is in a lot of pain. She can’t eat so they got a tube from her nose to feed her,” the relative further stated.
The injured woman’s husband, Alan Gildharie, 35, is said to be doing much better but his left leg is broken while he suffered minor injuries to the right.
Also, the couple’s two-year-old son, Alex Gildharie, is suspected to have sustained back injuries but relatives are awaiting the results of several scans that were taken to ascertain this.
The three other children who were involved in the accident, Kumarie’s two children, 7-year-old Navindra ‘Amesh’ Persaud and 6-year-old Geeta Persaud; her 10-year-old nephew Satesh Rajkumar, are all patients of the Paediatric Ward of the GPH.
According to Kumarie’s husband, Krishna Persaud, his son, Navindra, has suffered more serious injuries with an internal infection to his abdomen.
When Stabroek News visited the hospital yesterday, Rajkumar was found talking with Krishna Persaud while Geeta spoke with another relative.
The children have been placed within close proximity of each other.
Bus driver Vincent Persaud reportedly had to be rushed to the theatre on Sunday evening to have emergency surgery performed. This newspaper was unable to establish contact with his family but he was said to have been admitted as a patient of the High Dependency Unit of the GPH.
The driver of the car, Junior Ramroop, was said to be receiving medical treatment at the Suddie Hospital.
The accident occurred on Sunday around 11:30 hours. According to an eyewitness report, motorcar PPP 733 driven by Ramroop, was heading to Anna Regina with a female occupant while minibus BHH 6103, driven by Persaud and with eight occupants was expected to make its last stop at Lake Mainstay.
The Gildharie family was expected to disembark the minibus at Anna Regina, where they intended to visit a relative at the Suddie Hospital.
The other family was travelling to Lake Mainstay for the Regatta.
