Guyana’s top junior lawn tennis player Nicola Ramdyhan breezed through the qualifying round of the First Citizens Investment Services sponsored 2012 International Junior Tennis Tournament in St Vincent and the Grenadines and is into the main draw of the competition.
Ramdyhan topped her group after securing two wins while participating in the girls’ 14 years and under category.
Last weekend, Ramdyhan played in the round robin group matches against St Vincent’s Kamara Williams and Trinidad and Tobago’s Jovan Davidson in group two and won both matches.
The wins allowed her to enter into the main draw of the competition where only eight girls qualified.
This is Ramdyhan’s final year in the 14 years and under age category and she is battling to come out on top after finishing second last year to compatriot Aretta Dey who is not participating in this year’s competition.
Ramdyhan’s first challenge in the main draw is expected to come from Barbados’ Jaimie Lewis. The two were expected to go head-to-head yesterday.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s Judah Stephney was seeded third in the consolation of the boys’ 14 years and under category after he was defeated by Vincentian Alexander Cyrus and Trinidad’s Joshua Arnold in the qualifying round robin. Stephney was scheduled to play St Vincent’s Khamisi Bascome yesterday.
Stephney is also expected to participate in the boys’ doubles where he is paired with Trinidad and Tobago’s Juanaldo Greig; the two were scheduled to play the St Vincent pair of Josh Mounsey and Richard Hoyte yesterday afternoon.
Ramdyhan and Stephney are part of the four-member Guyana team participating at the tournament. The team is being managed by national coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan.
Craig Campbell and Shawna Gentle will participate in the 18 years and under category.
Campbell was down to play the sixth seed, Mexico’s Penchyna Cardenas yesterday while Gentle played Trinidad’s Danielle Devonish.
