Police checking camera footage in airport cocaine bust

The police are reviewing camera footage obtained on the night of August 2 when a bag containing 50 pounds of cocaine was found on a trolley at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri.

Crime Chief, Seelall Persaud told this newspaper yesterday that while the tapes are being reviewed, the work of the police may require technical assistance, given the nature of the problems being encountered with the review team.

He said that several persons continue to be questioned by the police in connection with the multi-million dollar bust.

This newspaper was told by airport sources that there are security cameras positioned strategically at various points around the airport, including the areas close to the domestic ramp at CJIA.

It is there, the source noted that surveillance teams including the anti-narcotics agents pay keen attention since ramp attendants and other airside staff frequent this area while cargo, mainly perishables, are prepared for loading on aircraft.

He said however, that the work of the drug traffickers is made easy given the organised nature in which persons working at Timehri operate in league with drug dealers.

According to a source, the surveillance cameras are serviced and technical teams ensure their operability almost daily and as such, he said that the authorities would be able to capture almost all movements at the airport.

The $25M worth of cocaine was intercepted by law enforcement agencies in an unclaimed bag that was on a trolley being prepared for loading on an outgoing Caribbean Airlines flight, which was expected to depart for the JFK airport in New York.

The drugs were wrapped in plastic in more than 20 parcels.

In March this year, two duffle bags containing 10 kilos of cocaine were found on the airside of the CJIA near the perimeter fence. An engineer attached to a local airline stumbled upon the two bags while working in the area.

No one was charged in connection with that incident.
