BLACK ROCK, Barbados, CMC – Guyana struggled against Barbados’ fast bowlers to fall for a paltry total, on a rain-hit opening day of the fifth round of matches in the Regional Under-19 Championship here yesterday.
Winning the toss and batting, Guyana were all out for 136, losing their last four wickets for 13 runs in four overs with the second new ball at the Desmond Haynes Oval.
Left-arm pacer Darnell Greenidge collected his three wickets, all by the lbw route in his fourth spell to claim three for 38.
Shawn Pereira made a fighting 33 from 112 deliveries in 143 minutes, including two fours and the only six of the innings which landed on top the pavilion.
He was the first wicket to fall to Greenidge, who returned to finish off the tail with two wickets in consecutive deliveries.
Earlier, in the first session, only 16 overs were possible due to two interruptions for rain and Guyana went to lunch on 22 for one.
The only casualty was Shimron Hetmeyer who helped a short delivery off his hip, from fast bowler Akeem Jordan (2-24) down the throat of Greenidge at fine- leg.
Jordan later got Dexter George caught at gully, fending off a lifter. Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul (25) and Kamesh Yadram laboured in a second-wicket partnership of 39 before offf-spinner Chaim Holder (2-34), got a double-strike in his sixth over. Yadram, who battled away for 20 in 112 minutes, was caught at slip by captain Shai Hope from a loose drive and three balls later, Chandrapaul Hemraj pushing uncertainly forward was caught behind without scoring. Pereria was badly missed by left-arm spinner Chad Williams off his own bowling before he had opened his account but settled down to help Guyana to tea on 76 for three. He was unbeaten on 10 and Chanderpaul, 25.
Afterward, Williams removed the obdurate Chanderpaul to a catch at the wicket from a thin edge after the batsman occupied the crease for 207 minutes, faced 156 balls, without striking any boundaries.
Williams added the wickets of Ricardo Adams (22) and Mohan Ramdeen (0) in successive overs to end with three for 39.
