Materials relevant to Guyana’s bird watching potential will be launched at the British Bird Watchers’ Fair, in Rutland, London during a three-day event starting tomorrow, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
A contingent of representatives from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Rupununi Trails, Dagron Tours, Surama, Iwokrama and Wilderness Explorers will be representing Guyana at the event which is esteemed as the largest bird fair in the world.
Guyana has over 860 species of birds and its reputation as a bird watcher’s paradise has been increasing, GINA said.
GTA’s Director, Indranauth Haralsingh highlighted that the publication being launched, entitled Birds of Essequibo, will help to accentuate the Essequibo region’s position as a bird watching destination while at the same time realising other tourism aspects in the region.
It is anticipated that Essequibo will join the Rupununi in its status as one of the most popular local bird watching destinations.
Additionally, another birding publication – Guyana birds to watch – has been revised and redesigned and will be among other materials on display at the Guyana booth, thereby providing bird enthusiasts with the latest updates and information on birding in Guyana.
Haralsingh said Guyana has evolved into a bird watcher’s paradise and there has been kudos for the quality of birds in Guyana and so participation in this year’s bird fair will definitely increase the attention.
Some of Guyana’s most distinct birds include the Harpy Eagle, Cock of the Rock, Wedge Tailed Grass Finch, Canje Pheasant, Parrot and Toucan.
GTA’s Director said also that following the fair, a seminar attracting the international press, tour operators and travel agents, among others will be held. This informative session will see presentations being made by members of the Guyana delegation and representatives from ICON Films and Caribbean Airlines.
He noted that over the last few years Guyana’s presentation at the bird fair has been well received and indicated that more people will be invited to participate in familiarization trips to Guyana, GINA added.
