Barbados salvage first innings points as Guyana slide

BLACK ROCK, Barbados, CMC – A half-century stand for the last wicket spared Barbados blushes and put them in a strong position to beat Guyana on the second day of their fifth round clash in the Regional Under-19 Championship here  yesterday.

Barbados were cruising at 104 for three before collapsing spectacularly to be tottering on 150 for nine, as they lost six wickets for just 46 runs at the Desmond Haynes Oval.

They were undermined by left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai who picked up five for 73 and pacer Romario Shepherd who claimed three for 34.

However, Carlos Maynard who stroked an even fifty found the perfect ally in last man Chad Williams (18 not out) and they deflated Guyana, adding 61 in 33.1 overs to see Barbados to 211 all out, in response to Guyana’s 136.

Guyana, trailing by 75 runs on first innings, were put under further pressure, losing both openers in the three overs to the close and were struggling on one run for two wickets.

Gudakesh Motie Kanhai

Tagenarine Chanderpaul was caught down the leg-side off Akeem Jordan for one and Shimron Hetmeyer was caught and bowled in the final over by Darnell Greenidge, without scoring.

Earlier, Barbados lost an early wicket when Craig St Hill fell for two.
However, in form Shai Hope with three centuries so far this season and Shayne Moseley put on 83 for the third wicket as they took Barbados to lunch strongly placed on 86 for one.

Motie-Kanhai then triggered a sensational collapse as seven wickets fell within the first hour for 48 runs.
Hope advancing down the track was caught and bowled for 27 and in the bowler’s next over, Moseley’s back-foot drive was low taken down for a fine 65. He was in for 134 minutes, faced 116 balls and struck four fours and two sixes.

Jameel Stuart was caught above the head by Dexter George running back at mid-on as he played against the turn and Jonathan Drakes made 25 before he was snared at square-leg from a top-edged sweep.

Greenidge was adjudged lbw to a faster delivery, four balls later without troubling the scores.
With two runs needed for first innings points, Maynard tickled Motie-Kanhai to fine-leg to achieve the vital lead.
Eventually, Maynard was caught at point ending an innings that spanned 165 minutes and came off 128 balls with six fours.
