Guyana got past Suriname 2-1 last Sunday for their only win in the group stage of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), FIFA under-20 World Cup qualifying tournament at Victoria Park, Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Losing to both Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 and to the host nation by a 3-1 margin, Guyana saved their best for last by defeating a Suriname team that had wins against both Trinidad and St. Vincent.
In a tough battle between the two rivals five yellow cards were handed out, four going to Suriname and one to Guyana.
However, it was Suriname that drew first blood when M. Darson opened with a stunning goal for his country that whizzed past Guyana’s keeper in the 18th minute.
Passive play then became the order between both teams after the halftime break as Suriname tried to play solid defense just before a Jamaal Booker strike found the back of the net in the 60th minute to level the score at 1-1.
Rejuvenated after drawing level with the Surinamese, Guyana made numerous attempts to pull ahead when a chance finally came in the 84th minute in the form of a penalty shot that was easily tucked away by Daniel Wilson to make the score 2-1. Wilson will be joining the senior team in Bolivia.
Booker then committed a hard foul in the 89th minute which resulted in him being red-carded and sent off the field.
However, Guyana was able to hold on to the lead in the final minutes to claim the much needed victory.
Meanwhile Trinidad and Tobago defeated the home team St. Vincent & the Grenadines 3-0 with all the goals being scored in the first half of the game.
