The Ministry of Tourism and the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) are teaming up to host the President’s Cup golf tournament in an initiative to promote sports tourism in Guyana.
The one-day tournament will take place on September 16th and will attract golfers from the Caribbean and even further afield.
Speaking at the Launch Tuesday, Minister of Tourism Infaan Ali said the tournament will be used as a platform to market the country as a golfing destination, on par with other Caribbean destinations.
“We are working from different angles in developing and expanding our tourism product. Golf has a special appeal to the upper and middle class market in the Caribbean; it has a target market,” Ali said.
He disclosed that his Ministry will be working closely with the Lusignan Golf Club in creating a space for Guyana within the golf market.
He said the President’s Cup will be added to the annual tourism calendar and advertisement for the inaugural event will be broadcast across the Caribbean in an effort to attract a wide cross section of amateur players.
Apart from overseas golfers, efforts are being made to have members of the diplomatic corps, business community and the discipline services compete.
Jerome Khan, President of the LGC said the club will offer technical guidance in the venture.
Guyana’s President Donald Ramotar is expected to tee off the tournament at 09:30 hours.
Local players interested in compete can contact the LGC at 220-5660 and a registration fee of $4000 will be charged or via the Guyana Tourism Authority website www.guyana-tourism.com.
Khan said golfers from neighbouring Suriname and French Guiana are excited about coming to take part in the tournament.
