GT&T today warned of a telephone scam in which landline subscribers are being made to wrongly believe that they have won a handset.
The press release follows:
“GT&T has received several customer complaints of a new telephone scam. Some individual(s) are placing calls, apparently to customers at random, informing them that they have won a GT&T BlackBerry handset. These customers are then advised to visit GT&T’s Office to uplift their prize. To date, only wire line customers have been targeted but mobile customers too need to be alert to this scam.
“Please take note that currently, GT&T has no promotion which gives customers an opportunity to win a BlackBerry handset. Any call which provides information to the contrary is malicious, misleading and to be ignored.
“We will spare no effort in seeking to identify and expose the individuals behind this scam and intend to work closely with the Guyana Police Force in this regard. In the meantime, we are asking customers who receive any such call to lodge a report with our Call Centre Operators on 0488. We would also encourage customers to protect themselves. Remember, do NOT give any personal information about yourself (name, address, place of employment, etc.) to unknown callers and, always try as far as possible to verify the identity of any person that claims to call on GT&T’s behalf. “
