Eight persons, including two children, were injured after a minibus with passengers collided with a truck near the junction of Carifesta Avenue and Camp Street.
Up to press time, all eight persons were receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital for their injuries that included broken feet and hands as well as head injuries and cuts and bruises to other parts of the body.
The malfunctioning traffic light at the head of the junction was blamed for the accident, which left the route 44 bus with damage to its right side, including a burst front tire and a shattered front windscreen. Spots of blood were also seen at the scene of the accident, which occurred at 4:30pm. An eyewitness, who assisted in pulling the injured out of the bus, said that it was heading to the East Coast at a fast rate. He added that it was about to make a right turn from Camp Street when it was hit by the truck, which was attempting to cross over Camp Street from Carifesta Avenue.
Bisoondai Mangra, the conductress of the bus that was driven by her husband, Andrew Balwandin, said that the bus was about to cross Camp Street onto Carifesta Avenue when it was hit and pitched a few feet away by the truck. She said that she felt the impact and hit her head and could not remember what took place after since she was confused.
However, the driver of the truck said that he was coming from Carifesta Avenue and was about to cross over Camp Street when he saw the bus coming in his direction at a fast rate. He added that before he could have slowed down, he collided head on with the bus. The truck driver is currently in police custody assisting with the investigations.
