Telecoms provider GT&T said yesterday that it has received several customer complaints of a new telephone scam, in which persons are placing calls, apparently to customers at random, informing them that they have won a GT&T BlackBerry handset.
The telephone company said in a press release that these customers are then advised to visit GT&T’s Office to uplift their prize, but currently the company has no promotion which gives customers an opportunity to win a BlackBerry handset.
To date, only wire line customers have been targeted but mobile customers too need to be alert to this scam, it said.
“We will spare no effort in seeking to identify and expose the individuals behind this scam and intend to work closely with the Guyana Police Force in this regard,” GT&T added.
In the meantime, customers who receive any such calls should lodge a report with the GT&T Call Centre Operators on 0488.
The telephone company also advised customers not to give any personal information about themselves and always try as far as possible to verify the identity of any person who claims to call on behalf of GT&T.
