Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Brigadier David Granger has expressed the party’s sadness on the death on August 13 of former Commissioner of Police, Laurie Lewis.
Condolences were also expressed to Lewis’s widow, Jennifer and their children, the PNCR said in a press release. Lewis will be remembered for the prominent role he played in many public organizations including the Queen’s College Old Student’s Association, Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, National Sports Commission and the Rotary Club of Georgetown, the party said.
According to the release, Lewis started his service in the British Guiana Police Force as a cadet officer in 1961 and was latter appointed commissioner in 1990. He was commissioner from 1990 until 2001 when he retired at the age of 60 after extended service.
The release also stated that Lewis was awarded the Disciplined Service Star for his service in the force and was also appointed Assistant Director General of the Guyana National Service in 1979.
