The Ministry of Home Affairs has said it is saddened over the passing last Monday of Laurie Lewis, former Commissioner of Police.
The Home Affairs Ministry said in a press release
that Lewis “served the Guyana Police Force with distinction and more particularly during his tenure as Commissioner of Police.”
“He was in charge of the Force during a critical period in its history in 1992 when there was a political transition in the country. He was known to have taken a number of initiatives to develop the Force, including the IMPACT Programme and the reform of Community Policing, which was aimed at bringing the Guyana Police Force closer to the public,” the ministry said
His impact on the Force was positive and he will be remembered for the efforts he made at improving the quality of policing in Guyana, the ministry said further, while expressing its condolences to his wife Jennifer Lewis, his children and other immediate relatives.
