Habitat for Humanity Guyana recently completed a home in Nappi Village, a traditional indigenous community, and this is also the first home it has constructed in Region 9, the international, non-profit, non-governmental organization said in a press release.
The organization presented the keys for the brand new Habitat home to Aunty Anita, as they have come to call her, in the presence of family members and villagers.
Habitat said that Aunty Anita is a highly regarded woman in the community who takes care of seven grandchildren. She ensures they are all in school, eat a healthy diet and she also takes care of the orchids she has planted which now surround her home.
The construction of the home was a community effort that resulted in the use of traditional indigenous building processes and materials.
Materials used which included palm leaves for the roof, wild guava wood for the columns and beams as well as the clay bricks were all sourced from Nappi, and this helped to provide a source of income for residents.
The idea for this project was shared with HFH Guyana by a Canadian University Service Overseas Guyana – CUSO (formerly Volunteer Services Overseas Guyana) working in Region 9. HFH Guyana and CUSO agreed to partner on the project, resulting in an extension of tenure for the CUSO volunteer and the allocation of material, financial and supervisory support during the construction process, the release added.
