A 21-year-old man arraigned on a charge of causing the death of his father by dangerous driving was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $450,000 when he made his appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
The allegation against Fizal Mohamed is that on August 19 on the Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), he drove motor car PKK 5609 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Rafeek Mohamed.
The driver was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of causing death by dangerous driving when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat who represented him made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail, stating that he has no previous conviction and has a fixed address at Friendship Squatting Area, EBD.
Counsel said that his client had been in custody in excess of the 72 hours stipulated by the constitution.
He said that Rafeek, the defendant’s father, will be buried in a couple of days and pleaded for bail so that Fizal would be able to attend his father’s funeral service.
The prosecution had no objection to the lawyer’s bail application but requested that the amount be substantial owing to the seriousness of the offence.
Fazil was then placed -on $450,000 bail.
His matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court for October 12.
The elder Mohamed, 53, died after two vehicles collided along the Land of Canaan Public Road on Sunday night. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
The accident occurred around 6:45pm.
The vehicle in which the older Mohamed was travelling was driven by his son.
