The University of Guyana today announced that it has postponed the start of classes for the new academic year.
It cited industrial unrest this year as among the factors that influenced it.
The press release follows:
The University of Guyana has taken a decision to postpone the commencement of classes for the 2012-2013 academic year.
The University was scheduled to commence its teaching activities on Monday, August 27, 2012. However, after due consideration of the delays which were occasioned by the industrial action during the 2011-2012 academic year, the consequential effects and other factors including the recent release of results by CXC, it was decided to postpone the commencement of the 2012-2013 classes from August 27, 2012, to September 10, 2012.
The Ceremonial Opening which was scheduled for August 24, 2012 has also been postponed to September 07, 2012.
This period of postponement does not apply to the attendance of the academic staff. They are expected to be on duty, unless they are on some form of leave, which relieves them of the responsibility of being on the job.
The University regrets any inconvenience that the postponement may cause but wishes to assure all that the decision was taken in the best interest of the University’s stakeholders.
It should also be noted that it is not the intention to push-back the end date for classes for the Semesters. It is the intention to do internal rescheduling that would accommodate the conclusion of teaching and examinations for Semester 1 on December 21, 2012.
The registration deadline has however been deferred to September 03, 2012. Registration after that deadline would incur a late fee once the student was not affected by any internal delay.
The revised schedule of deadlines for Semester 1, 2012-2013 will be released shortly. Semester II should not be affected by this postponement.
