The election of a new executive to manage the affairs of cricket in Guyana is being held up by the ongoing court matter involving the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB).
Clive Lloyd, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) for Cricket, made that disclosure during an interview at the closing ceremony of the East Coast Demerara Cricket Academy yesterday.
”We would really like to have the Demerara Board involved and they now have an injunction in court. If that could be sorted out quickly, I am sure we would be able to have elections as quickly as possible,” Lloyd told Stabroek Sport in an invited comment. The former West Indian captain said that everything else is in place and so he is hoping that the courts can discharge the matter quickly. “You know we have been on consultations throughout the country and we just need the board constituted as quickly as possible so that we can get back to normalcy really. And hopefully the weather will change so that we can get back to some serious cricket.
Because I think that we have some talented young people. If you noticed we don’t have a lot of cricket but our under-19 performed exceedingly well. So I think that in five years time Guyana will be able to rival any of those nations.”
According to Lloyd, he is not sure when the matter would be discharged in the courts but would hope it is done sooner rather than later as the input of the Demerara Cricket Board is very vital towards the completion of the constitution.
Bissoondial Singh, former president of the DCB, reached for a comment, would only say that the matter is before the court.
The Demerara Cricket Board’s matter resulted from two annual general meetings at separate places which saw two boards both claiming to be the legitmate body to deal with cricket in Demerara.
Apart from the DCB court matter, Lloyd said that the IMC was still working on getting some matters of interest to the stakeholders fixed in the constitution.
“It’s not a lot, but things like membership that people might have some quirks about, but it’s nothing difficult. I don’t think we will have to go through the entire constitution, it’s just one and two things we have to discuss but it is a very sound document.”
