Guyana’s National Sevens rugby team won two matches and lost one as the 2013 North America and the Caribbean Rugby Association World Cup qualifiers commenced yesterday at the Twin Elms Rugby Park, Ottawa, Canada.
Playing in Group `C’ and seeded number one, Guyana defeated Trinidad 10-0 yesterday morning but lost to Barbados 12-19. They rebounded to defeat the Cayman Islands 15-12 yesterday afternoon and book a quarter final spot against Mexico today.
Barbados beat Cayman Islands 19-12 but lost to Trinidad 0-17 while Trinidad beat Cayman Islands 24-21.
All three teams ended on six points but Trinidad topped the group on a better points for and against ratio.
Today Guyana will play Mexico at 1040am in the second of four quarter final matches.
The other quarter final matches will see Trinidad playing Jamaica, Barbados opposing Canada and the United States of America playing
The Bahamas.
Two teams will qualify for the finals to be held in Russia next year.
Canada and the USA are heavy favourites in the men’s tournament.
