Region 10 Chairman Sharma Solomon has written Guyana’s Ambassador to the Organisation of American States, Bayney Karran saying that his recent presentation to the OAS Permanent Council on the Linden unrest contained inaccuracies and misrepresentations.
Karran’s presentation on August 22, 2012 in which he called for the OAS to keep a watch on Guyana in the face of what he said was the precarious situation here has attracted criticisms from various sectors including from the PNCR. Karran’s presentation had cited irresponsible opposition and community leaders for ongoing problems in the community.
Solomon’s letter to Karran said that after reading an account of the Ambassador’s remarks in the August 25 edition of Stabroek News “I feel compelled, as the Regional Chairperson for Region 10, to signal to you that the presentation contained a number of inaccuracies and misrepresentations.”
Solomon added that he was not trying to prove and fend on Linden but wanted to expend his energies on the implementation of the economic agreement for the mining town which had been signed with Prime Minister Sam Hinds the day before Karran made his presentation to the OAS forum in Washington.
The regional chairman told Karran that he was forwarding correspondence between him and the PM attesting to the region’s determination to implement the agreement and told Karran to feel free to share the information with the OAS and any other relevant entities.
“As an indication of my earnestness in the steadfast pursuit of the objective of the expeditious implementation of that Agreement, I offer to you a copy of the letter that I addressed to the Prime Minister. I think it speaks for itself, and for the Region 10 determination to implement the Agreement. In apprising the OAS and any other entities of the stance of Region 10, please feel free to share that correspondence with them”, he said.
Karran had told the Permanent Council: “The government wishes to underscore that this prolonged period would not have been possible without the complicity of the leading opposition parties to refuse or neglect to call off the protest as well as the advocacy and misinformation spread by certain media and social networking sites,” he declared.
He added that the “government is deeply concerned about this new political environment and the conduct of the official parliamentary parties and fringe elements following the November 28, 2011 elections. The government is therefore cautioning that the situation in Guyana is precarious and is one that warrants close attention by our fellow member states in the OAS,” Karran told the OAS.
