Woman, 52, on bail over $2.4M embezzlement from workplace

A 52-year-old woman accused of embezzling $2.4M from her place of employment was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $350,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

The allegation against Karen Lynch is that between March 4 and April 30, being employed as a clerk or servant by Green Stone Gold Incorporated, with the sum of $2.4M taken into her possession for the said company, she  embezzled the said sum.

The woman who resides at 47 Gordon Street, Kitty, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of embezzlement by clerk or servant when it was read to her.

Attorney Keavon Bess who represented the accused made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail, stating that she has no antecedents, has a fixed address, and poses no risk of flight.

Counsel argued that his client had made a complaint to the Ministry of Labour against the complainant company which has outstanding salaries owing to her.

According to Bess, the Labour Ministry has since ordered the company to pay his client but it has failed to comply with that order.  Sometime later, Bess said, his client was slapped with the embezzlement charge.

The prosecution had no objections to the accused being granted her pretrial liberty but requested that she lodge her passport with the police and report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday at 9:00am.

The matter will be called again on October 5.
