Amerindian Heritage Month was launched last evening at the Sophia Exhibition Centre under the theme ‘Embracing our Identity, Celebrating our Culture’.
This year’s Amerindian village is Maicobee which is located in Region 8 and on display were Amerindian craft, jewellery and cuisines.
Seats in the benab where the ceremony was held were filled with persons and children thereby forcing others, including members of the media, to stand for over two hours while the programme was ongoing.
Speaking at the opening ceremony was Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, who said that there is a need for Amerindians to recognize themselves and embrace the need to reconnect and appreciate their culture while celebrating with pride.
She also spoke about the challenges that are affecting Amerindians but also assured persons that government is addressing the issue.
President Donald Ramotar, who gave the feature address, said he is pleased with the progress made by indigenous people and the commitment to embrace indigenous culture. He also took the time to encourage all Guyanese to support observances like Amerindian Month.
Also speaking was Chairman of the National Toshaos Council, Derrick John, who noted that Amerindians are proud to be who they are and of the contribution they have made to the development of Guyana.
Amerindian Heritage Month is celebrated every year in September.
