The Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) of Guyana in association with Raf’s Variety Store is set to bowl off its second annual Hajjin Zeleena Rafeek Memorial Countrywide Inter-Jamaat 10/10 knockout softball cricket tournament today at the MYO Ground, Woolford Avenue, Thomas Lands.
According to Fazal Rafeek, one of the sponsors, the tournament started last year with 46 masjids taking part and this year with more competitors there is an eagerness to increase the prizes.
Last year’s competition was deemed a success, being the largest countrywide inter-jamaat softball cricket competition.
The competition last year saw the Adventure/JC Masjid winning the inaugural tournament by 32 runs, defeating Enmore Masjid.
Meanwhile, Adventure/JC Masjid will be looking to defend their title but the other masjids are aiming to dethrone them.
According to the coordinator of the tournament, the teams will be vying for a number of trophies and cash incentives.
The first place winner will receive $300,000 and a trophy while $200,000, $100,000, $50,000 and trophy will go to the second, third and fourth place teams respectively.
Prizes will also be awarded to the Man-of-the-Match in the finals, the 3rd place playoff, and in all four quarterfinal matches, as well as for most wickets of the tournament, most runs, highest individual score and best bowling figures.
In addition, medals will be presented to the finalists in this year’s tournament.
The finals are set to played under lights at the MYO Ground, Thomas Lands.
In the tournament Ogle will play against Success at 9am and then MYO will take on Triumph. Versailles will come against Sisters Jamaat at 12pm and the final match will see Old Mosque team take on Lusignan at 3pm.
There will be an opening ceremony before the tournament commences and the sponsors are expected to make brief remarks.
