A 27-year-old mechanic died on the spot last night on the Goed Fortuin Public Road on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD) after he collided with a motor car.
Dead is Kenrick Roach called “Junior“, a father of five and a popular motorcycle mechanic who operated at his home at Lot 164, Roxanne Burnham Gardens.
According to reports, around 8:15 pm, Roach was heading north along the Goed Fortuin Public Road on his motorcycle when he collided head-on with a Toyota Raum motorcar bearing registration PLL 4254 which was heading in the direction of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The man sustained broken limbs while his helmet was smashed into several pieces following the collision.
The young man’s friend, Dion Howard, told Stabroek News at the scene that he was on another motorcycle in front of Roach when he observed a car heading towards him. He said that he and Roach were heading to the village of Pouderoyen at the time.
According to Howard, who wept profusely, he was riding around the turn at that section of the roadway, ”and this man coming to we overtaking pon the outside and I barely dodge he but when I look back I see me fren in the air and the bike in pieces”. Roach died on the spot.
When this newspaper arrived at the scene scores of persons had gathered along the roadway and traffic drew to a crawl on the usually busy roadway.
The man’s body was taken to the Ezekiel Funeral home where relatives confirmed the young’s man’s identity.
His grieving sister related that the man’s younger brother died several years ago while crossing the DHB and according to her, the family was also mourning the loss of a relative who died recently.
The driver of the car involved in the accident was taken into custody at the La Grange Police Station.
