There were to be no heroes for the ‘minnows’ as the traditionally stronger teams in Georgetown cricket all completed innings victories before 3pm on the second day of the Carib Beer and Friends of Cricket Heroes Cup cricket competition.
Robin Bacchus stroked an unbeaten double hundred to lead Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) to an outright victory by an innings over Gandhi Youth Organisation. Bacchus had brought up his century late on Saturday’s first day’s play and went on to strike a total of 33 fours and a solitary six in a marathon innings on the good Bourda batting track. GYO’s only success
was the wicket of Winston Forrester on day one, as Jeetendra Sookdeo progressed to a century of his own, scoring 102 with 12 fours to enable GCC to assert their overnight position of 1 for 213, leading by 99.
GCC declared on 1 for 333 in 66 overs of batting, a score which itself suggests how briskly the batsmen scored. Egged on by a lead of 219, seamer Joshua Wade collected two wickets for GCC in his first over, bowling Abilash Dookie and Ryan Shun. Tagenarine Chanderpaul staged a minor recovery with 33 before he was dismissed by Forrester.
Spinners Forrester and Nanan bowled in tandem and kept the pressure on the batsmen and GYO declared their innings closed with a wicket still in hand, opting to lose the game before being bowled out, the result being an innings and 139 run loss as they closed on 9 for 80. Forrester, enjoying a good tournament with both bat and ball finished with figures of 4 for 17 from 10 overs, and Devon Lord wrapped up the tail with 2 for 7.
Nanan bowled a miserly spell of 11 overs for 13 runs while picking up a wicket and Joshua Wade bowled seven overs for 28 runs, picking up two wickets. Malteenoes Sports Club completed an outright victory by an innings and 130 runs early on day two against Police Sports Club. Malteenoes resumed on 6 for 305 and declared on 8 for 354 with Orin Forde, 21 not out overnight, going on to make 53 as Malteenoes set the cops a total of 273 to make them bat a second time.
Seon Crawford took two more wickets in addition to the two he took on day one to end with 4 for 53 and Vishal Jaigobin collected 3 for 71. PSC reached 9 for 137 innings closed in their second innings to grant Malteenoes an early victory. Trevor Benn failed to make the most of a start as he made 27 with five fours while Seon Crawford 26, Shameer Fazal 22, and Ejaz Mohamed 26 also did not build on starts.
Antonell Atwell was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 9; Steven Jacobs had 2 for 28, and Danny Narayan 2 for 37.
Transport Sports Club (TSC) was to have no hero as DCC also pulled off an early victory on day two. DCC had made 7 for 353 on the first day in response to TSC’s 77 all out in their first innings.
Batting a second time Transport were bowled out for 103 in just 34.1 overs.
Andre Stoll picked up two wickets on the first day for just eight runs, while Totaram Bishun picked up 3 for 39 as DCC won by an innings and 155 runs.
National wicket keeper batsman Derwin Christian picked up two wickets for no runs with the ball to go with his pugnacious century on the first day.
