(Barbados Nation) The Grantley Adams International Airport has been mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to do background checks on its Immigration and Customs officers.
This was recently revealed by the “top brass” of the Customs & Excise Department at a meeting that involved representatives from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) held at the Warrens Complex.
A Customs official, who spoke to the MIDWEEK NATION on the condition of anonymity, said that background checks were now being done to satisfy the requirements of ICAO.
The source, who attended the meeting, said background checks were being conducted by the Royal Barbados Police Force, a decision that has reportedly not found favour with a high percentage of Customs and Immigration officers.
