A teen was yesterday fined for stealing items from a store where he worked.
Eston Yarris, 17, of South Sophia, was ordered to pay a $25,000 fine or serve 12 months in jail by Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court
Yarris was employed at the Boxanese Store, from where he stole a mini music box, five earpieces and a belt.
Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick stated that Yarris was observed by the supervisor on duty with a belt attached to his pants, about which he was questioned. He was, however, unable to explain how he acquired the belt.
Bostwick said that as a result the relevant authorities were contacted and Yarris subsequently confessed and took the police to his home, where a search uncovered five earpieces and the mini music box.
Attorney Terrene Haynes, who represented Yarris, said that her client had learnt his lesson and had assured her that he will never make the mistake again.
When given the opportunity to speak, a soft-spoken Yarris said that a friend of his picked up the items and gave it to him. He added that because he was scared of what would happen to him if he carried back the items, he decided to keep them at home.
