Five athletes were reportedly selected for the upcoming Under-23 championships in Sao-Palo, Brazil coming out of a meeting with coaches and the Athletics Association Guyana’s (AAG) selection panel last evening.
According to a reliable source, junior 400 metres star Stephan James, who made both the 200 and 400 metres qualifying times with runs of 21.2s and 46.99s respectively will spearhead the team.
National junior 100 metres champion Chavez Ageday, who equalled the 100 metres time for the event with a run of 10.50s at the trials last weekend also gained selection on the five member squad according to reports.
Two-time CARIFTA Games 1500 metres gold medalist Jevina Straker, who ran unchallenged in her 800 and 1500 metres last weekend recording decent times will also be a part of the team.
Rounding out the five will be Cindy Fraser, who jumped her way into contention for selection in the long jump event while the final selectee Natreena Hopper did the same in the triple jump event at the trials last weekend.
It was also disclosed that the reason for the two jumpers being selected was because of the fact that both females are within striking distance of a bronze medal after comparing their jumps to last year’s medal winners at the Under-23 championships.
Tevin Garraway up to press time is seemingly the only selectee for the Youth South American Championships in Argentina as he was the only qualifier at the trails last weekend according to the source.
