Residents turned out in large numbers at the Airy Hall Grounds on the Essequibo Coast to support efforts for the establishment of a new community library at the Riverstown Primary School.
The July 8 Sunday Fun Day bustled with food, drinks, friends and fun and featured an adult cricket competition, children’s games with prizes, face painting and music, a press release from the United States Peace Corps Guyana said.
Community members came together to prepare food items, run the children’s games and organise the other activities which contributed to making the event a hit.
“This activity would not have been possible without the support and efforts of Peace Corps Volunteer Ashley Borree, the community members as well as the local businesses that donated funds for the initial start-up costs,” the release said. The objective of the exercise was to raise funds and assist the community to help supplement the purchasing of new books and materials for the library.
According to the release, the fun day was “so important to the community because it not only raised the necessary funds, but brought people together, and got them excited about the library and about education.” The Peace Corps said community members are passionate about education, their children and the future of the country; they want to see growth and improvements but “alone the task can seem impossible. The fun day made the community members realize that this goal is within their reach, that together they can make it happen, and that every little act can make a big difference.”
