AFC calls for national effort to avert crisis in education

The Alliance for Change (AFC) is calling on all stakeholders in the education sector to play a more vital role in producing well-qualified students so as to advance the development of the country, considering the unimpressive results in recent exams.

“We believe that it has come to a time where we need a national effort to address the crisis in education. We’re urging the government to convene a conference where all the principle stakeholders can examine the present state of education and establish long-term goals that will be sufficient for the next 10 to 15 years … and for producing students who are appropriately qualified for the industries that we hope to exploit,” Chairman of the party, Attorney Nigel Hughes said at a press briefing on Thursday.

Quizzed about whether this was pointed at the work of the fairly new Education Minister, Priya Manickchand, Hughes explained that the initiative is aimed at building a better Guyana in the future.

“This is not directed to the minister at all… We don’t actually have to be in office to make recommendations on how we think Guyana can be better in the future so again this is not a commentary of the minister. She’s been there, she’s trying her best under the circumstance and we don’t want to comment on her because this is a larger issue,” he stated.

He said that if the nation will aim at a successful future, then what is being produced in the school system must first be examined.

“It’s clear that the results that come out of CXC are not particularly encouraging and Guyana needs to embark immediately on a course of action to mission itself as a country that is able to cope with the world in the next ten years, in being able to bring young people in the world who are able to present skills that will give them an advantage and not condemn them to certain less rewarding jobs,” Hughes pointed out.
