Shondell Smith, a salesgirl, was yesterday accused of stealing over $200,000 from her employer’s safe.
Smith, 28, of Timehri, pleaded not guilty when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where she was placed on $75,000 bail. It is alleged that Smith, between September 1 and 4, stole the sum of $210,000, which was property of her employer, Sharon Letlow.
The prosecution stated that Smith was employed as a salesgirl at Letlow’s stall at the Vendors Arcade Mall, where she was from time to time entrusted with cash to take to the safe. Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said that Letlow went to deposit the sum of $9,500 in the safe and discovered that some money was missing. Letlow then went to the Stabroek Market police outpost and made a report. Smith was contacted and told of the offence then subsequently arrested and charged.
There were no objections to bail.
The matter was then transferred to Court Two, where it will called on October 1 for reports and fixtures.
