The lifeless body of a 15-year-old boy was yesterday afternoon pulled from the Lama Conservancy, commonly called the `Blacka’.
Dead is Daniel Younge of South Ruimveldt Park and of Callender Street, Albouys-town. He was a student of the Nehemiah Comprehensive Secondary School in the city.
According to reports, around 2 pm yesterday, the boy’s older siblings were told that he may have fallen into the waterway. His siblings rushed to the area, aback North Ruimveldt and persons converged on the scene to find out what was happening. Persons in the area subsequently jumped into the water and a little later the boy’s fully-clothed body was brought to the surface.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival and according to a police source, based on the state of the body, Younge may have been at the bottom of the water for several hours.
His brother recalled that Younge left their South Ruimveldt home in the company of two other boys from the area earlier in the day. He said he did not hear anything about his brother until he received a message that his body was in the conservancy. He said he immediately rushed to the area where his worst fears were confirmed.
Reports are that his friends left the scene after he could not be found and persons in the area related that no one knew that a body was in the water until an alarm was raised sometime after 2 pm yesterday. It is unclear what time the boys arrived at the conservancy.
According to his aunt, ”this whole thing suspicious because Daniel could swim and we can’t really understand how he end up in there with all he clothes on”.
At the GPH, scores of relatives of Younge gathered as news of his passing spread. His mother, June-Ann Peters who was on the East Coast of Demerara at the time, broke down in tears as she arrived at the GPH. The man’s father, who operates Yam’s Liquor Store at Saffon Street, La Penitence was expected in the country last evening.
Younge leaves to mourn his parents and 10 other siblings. His body is at the Lyken’s Funeral Home in the city.
