A teenager, who is charged with snatching a woman’s purse, yesterday told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that he committed the crime because he was “hungry and confused”.
Akeeni Saul, of ‘B’ Field Sophia, who gave his age as 18 although he looked much younger, was remanded to prison by the magistrate, who said that a probation officer will need to get in contact with his parents and confirm his age.
It was alleged that on September 10, while on a bicycle, Saul stole a handbag with items totalling $41,750. It was the property of Alvina Lynch.
The court heard that on the day in question, at about 1.30 pm, Lynch had a black purse in her right hand, when Saul approached her from behind on a bicycle and snatched the purse.
The prosecution stated that after the purse was taken, Lynch raised an alarm and public-spirited citizens chased behind Saul, who was captured and taken into police custody.
A very sad Saul, when given a chance to explain why he committed the offence, said, “I didn’t want to do it, but I was hungry and confused.”
Saul added that since he was in police custody his parents did not know what he did.
