Pepsi Sonics basketball Club will lather this month stage a first and third division tournaments at the outdoor Burnham Basketball Court.
Dubbed “Refresh Your Game,” the tournaments will run from September 28 to October 14.
Prizes totaling $262,500.00 will be a stake.
According to a press release from the club, the aim of the tournament is to re-energise the sport while recognizing the contribution of the late president of the Guyana Amateur basketball Federation Godwin McPherson, who passed away last August. “Tournaments of this nature need resources since sponsorship is critical to the hosting of successful tournaments,” said Pepsi Sonics’ Merle Casey.
“The point needs to be stressed that businesses need to get on board to help in sustaining basketball and Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club is the forerunner in keeping basketball activities in the boil.
There is definite need for the restoration of basketball at all standards and for both male and female,” Casey opined.
According to the release, tournaments involving local and international teams had to be cancelled due to the lack of playing facilities of reasonable standard in Georgetown, apart from the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
“The Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club, like so many others, is deeply concerned about the state of basketball in the country, and has taken the initiative to begin the process of re-energising basketball and bringing it to its former glory,” Casey said.
