A night shelter lodger, accused of assaulting and threatening to kill another lodger, was yesterday placed on a bond to keep the peace by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on September 10, at the East La Penitence night shelter, in Georgetown, Mark Persaud, 41, unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Henry Gibbons, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
It is also alleged that on the said date, Persaud used threatening language to Gibbons, whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned.
Persaud pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that Gibbons was on his bed relaxing when Persaud began to make loud sounds, disturbing Gibbons. When Gibbons asked him to desist from making noise, Persaud then became annoyed and allegedly choked Gibbons, while threatening to kill him.
The prosecution had no objections to bail, but sought the condition that because the two live together at the same shelter, they should be made to be on their best behaviour. The magistrate then granted the prosecution’s request, placing both tenants on a bond to keep the peace, pending the determination of the matter.
The matter was transferred to court 10 for September 18, for reports and fixtures.
