A 71-year-old man on his way home was last evening hit and killed by a car at Industry, Railway Line, East Coast Demerara as he attempted to cross the roadway. The driver of the car is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Dead is Edward Ashby of Lot 53 Third Street, Industry. The accident occurred around 19:45 hrs and the elderly man was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. His daughter Beverly Ashby told Stabroek News that her father left home around 10 am yesterday to visit friends and at the time of his death he was returning home. She said that her father stopped off at Sugrim Singh Road and was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by a Toyota Raum.
The woman said that it was persons who rushed to the scene who held onto the driver and later handed him over to the police. The tearful woman said that the driver is claiming that another vehicle hit the man resulting in him being thrown into the path of his vehicle.
Beverly said that it was someone who rushed to the scene who later informed them of the accident. By then the body had already been taken to the hospital. The woman said that the impact left her father with serious injuries including a fractured skull.
From all indicationsm she said, he died on the spot.
When Stabroek News visited the residents many villagers had gathered to comfort the grieving relatives.
Ashby leaves to mourn five children.
