Carib Beer Heroes Cup

Malteenoes Sports Club was in a strong position after the first day’s play of the Georgetown Cricket Association Carib Beer and Friends of Cricket Heroes Cup first division match against Transport Sports Club at the MSC ground, Thomas Lands.
Malteenoes SC won the toss and inserted TSC who were dismissed for a paltry 133 with Quinn Procter offering the only resistance with an even 50 as leg-spinners Steven Sankar and Danny Narayan picked up three and two wickets respectively.
Shae Chase and Sunil Singh chipped in with 26 and 24 runs respectively.
Malteenoes, in reply, scored 218 all out on the back of an undefeated century from Deon Ferrier. Ferrier’s 101 contained 10 well timed fours and three sixes. Kwame Cross scored 38 with seven boundaries but no other Malteenoes batsman made any score of significance.
Kevin Ross wrapped up the tail to finish with 5 for 32 while Keon Morris took 3 for 49. Transport must score at least 85 runs to make Malteenoes bat again.
In Queenstown, Elton Baker smashed 164 to give GNIC the edge over Gandhi Youth Organisation after the first day’s play.
On a good pitch for batting, with a fast, freshly cut outfield, GNIC won the toss and elected to bat first. After an early wobble GNIC recovered superbly to reach 305 all out in 54 overs. Baker struck 16 fours and five sixes and received support from Dexter Solomon 65 (three fours and two sixes) and Collis Butts 30 (five fours).
GNIC were in a shaky position at seven for two after Leon Scott picked up a couple early wickets. After Shawn DeSouza was dismissed by Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Baker and Butts rebuilt the innings with a 103-run partnership while Baker and Solomon put on 154 for the fifth wicket. Bowling for GYO Pravindralall Persaud collected 2 for 35, Brian Sattaur 2 for 38 and Scott 3 for 34.
Opener Sattaur departed in the second over of GYO’s innings lbw swiping across the line of a delivery from Baker to place GYO on the back foot. However, GYO recovered to finish on 2 for 134.
Anthony Ifill was the other batsman to depart for 64 while Chanderpaul remained not out at 24. GYO trail GNIC by 156 runs with eight wickets in hand, including that of Under 19 batsman Kamesh Yadram.
With four successive outright wins and first innings so far against Transport Sports Club, Malteenoes Sports Club is assured of the top spot in this year’s two-day competition. MSC began this game on 141 points, 28 points ahead of their nearest rival DCC and 43 points ahead of third placed GCC. Malteenoes took an unassailable lead by taking 10 wickets yesterday and then gaining first innings points over Transport Sports Club. The three top teams each have a game in hand.
