Police Sports Club (PSC) and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) were among the winners when the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) New Building Society (NBS) second division limited overs competition continued at several venues in the city yesterday.
At the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) ground, PSC’s Ryan Rajmangal produced a superlative all round effort to spoil Demerara Cricket Club’s run in the competition.
PSC batted first and racked up a commanding total of 375 -9 in their allotted 40 overs thanks to 138 from Rajmangal.
Rajmangal scored 106 of his runs in boundaries striking 25 fours and a single maximum. Steve Blacks slammed 60 with 11 fours and a six on the small GNIC ground while Jermain Reynolds hit nine fours and a six in 47 and Troy Benn, 32.
Orlando Sturge, normally miserly, was DCC’s most successful bowler with 2 for 70 from eight overs.
DCC’s chase was stymied by the regular fall of wickets.
Kemol Savory got them off to a good start with 36 but they lost their first wicket at 32 when Khemraj Rupee was caught off the bowling of Benn. Dexter George, promoted up the order, scored his second successive half century but fell short of a century when he was caught off Rajmangal for 88 with 11 fours and a six. Dennis Squires also hit another half century but perished for 52 with four boundaries and four maximums as DCC reached 277 all out in 35 overs. Rajmangal capped a fine all-round performance with 5 for 47 from 6.2 overs while Benn picked up 3 wickets for 46 runs to ensure Police won by 98 runs.
At Bourda, GCC continued their winning ways by dispatching Everest by 39 runs.
GCC batted first and scored 218-9 in 40 overs with Elton Fernandes top scoring with 90 aided by five fours and two sixes. The improving Almando Doman scored 40 with five fours while opener Alex Romalho made 24.Winston Forrester chipped in with 21.
Four wickets fell in the last over three by the run out route while the other batsman was bowled.
Dwayne Perreira picked up 2 for 43 and Shaheed Mohamed, who bowled the final over, 2 for 31.
Everest, in reply, was restricted to 179-9 in 40 overs.
Shaheed Mohamed struck a half century but did not receive support.
Mohamed blasted eight fours and two sixes in the top score of 70 but no other batsman reached 20 as Cleon Critchlow collected 5 for 38.
In a close encounter at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) ground, Thomas Lands, GNIC prevailed over the fighting Vikings by seven runs.
GNIC batted first and was dismissed for 204 in 33 overs with Ken Alphonso top scoring with 61. Jermaine Grovesnor supported with 32 while Devon Fraser made 24. Jadon Samuels took 3 for 29, Blair Haynes 2 for 52, and Yusuf Ali 2 for 37.
Vikings, in reply, fought bravely to reach 197 all out in just 22 overs. Blair Haynes scored 40, S Alexander 30, and A. Haniff 24 as Vikings threatened to score an upset win. Latchman Bissessar collected 4 for 48 with his left-arm spin while three players L. George, Grovesnor and J. George picked up two wickets each for 46, 37 and 28 runs respectively.
At the Gandhi Youth Organisation ground, Malteenoes defeated Transport Sports Club by three wickets.
Transport scored 154 all out in 27.1 overs with number 10 batsman Clyde Hoyte top scoring with 54. Jonathan Alphonso scored 41 and Shawn Massiah 26 as Vishal Narayan collected 3 for 50, Shaquille Williams 2 for 19, and Cordel Mars 2 for 25.
Malteenoes’s chase was off to a decent start as Nichosie Barker scored 45 opening the batting while Keifer Naughton made 42. Denzil Alleyne then scored an unbeaten 20 to see Malteenoes to 158-7 from 32 overs.
Jonathan Alphonso picked up 3 for 19 and Azim Azeez 2 for 34. At the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) ground, the home team defeated the University of Guyana by 48 runs.
MYO batting first, scoring 278-9 in 40 overs. Mohamed Wazidali made the top score of 71 with nine fours and a six while Abraham Wazidali contributed 31 and Saheed Gittens 41. Dennis Heywood took 3 for 62 and Royston Alkins 2 for 30.
Alkins then scored 39 in UG’s reply of 230 all out in 34.3 overs. Melroy Stephenson top scored with 57 and Heywood made 28. Imtiaz Pooran took 4 wickets to secure victory for the home team.
Today DCC will oppose the University of Guyana at the GYO ground while Transport Sports Club will face off with Police Sports Club at the YMCA ground, Thomas Lands. All games commence at 11a.m.
