New Building Society second division competition…

The University of Guyana rebounded from a loss on Saturday to stun the Demerara Cricket Club, while Transport Sports Club held on for a hard fought win over Police Sports Club as early morning rains reduced the two scheduled New Building Society second division matches to T20s.
At the small Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) ground, UG batted first and reached a competitive 162-9 thanks to 39 from Kenroy Joseph, who struck three fours and three sixes. Although the majority of the UG batsmen failed to get going, DCC contributed 33 runs in extras while Melroy Stephenson propped up the score with 18. Bowling for DCC, Dexter George collected 3 for 17, Dennis Squires 2 for 20 and Omesh Dhanram 2 for 32.
Opners Kemol Savory and Coen Ismond gave DCC a rapid start but once they were both dismissed, the remaining batsmen followed suit as DCC were bowled out for 142 in 19 overs. Damian Vantull took 3 for 16, Royston Alkins 2 for 9 and N. Carryl 2 for 22. Ismond made 28 and Savory 21 but their efforts were futile as the Queenstown side finished 20 runs short.
Transport Sports Club pulled off a nail-biting four-run victory over Police SC. Transport SC batted first and hit their way to 170 all out in exactly 20 overs. Stephon Sampson top scored with 49, striking four fours and three sixes while Azim Azeez contributed 45 with four fours and three sixes and Shawn Massiah hit two sixes in 22. Jermaine Reynolds collected 3 for 24, Vishal Jaigobin 2 for 20 and Leon Crawford 2 for 25.
Police fought gamely but the loss of wickets regularly saw them being dismissed for 165 with three balls remaining in the innings.
Jermaine Reynolds hit 45 with six sixes while Troy Benn scored 25 with two sixes and a four. Munilall Persaud scored 25 with two sixes and Leon Crawford contributed 19 with two sixes. Bowling for Transport SC, Clyde Hoyte took 2 for 29, Azim Azeez 2 for 37, Shawn Massiah 2 for 29 and Jonathan Alphonso 2 for 39.
Transport SC caught well in the field as Police offered catching practice with eight catches going to their outfielders. With 14 runs to get off the final over, Massiah was struck for a six off the first delivery, before getting a hand on a straight drive which ricocheted onto the stumps to dismiss the final Police batsman and ensure an exciting five-run victory for Transport.
