Ron Motilall and Anthony Drayton are the early leaders after four rounds of the Topco 2012 National Junior Championship Chess Qualifiers played on Sunday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street.
The two players are on three points each. They are followed by Saeed Ali and Trenton Bennnett with 2.5 points each and Carlos Petterson, Cheng Shin Chu, Othneil Lewis and Roberto Neto on two points each.
The remaining players Joshua Pedro, Davion Mars, Meikel Mahabir, Ryan Mc Kay, Davendra Naraine and Dravin Drickpaul are on one and a half points each in the seven rounds Swiss system competition for players under the age of 20.
The competition will end on Sunday.
Prizes would also be awarded to the Best Under-13 and Under-16 Players.
The top seven performers will go forward to play in the 2012 National Junior Chess Championship along with National
Junior Champion Haifeng Su who will be defending his title. Notable absentee is former national junior chess champion Cecil Cox.
The tournament is sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) under the TOPCO Juices brand and the company recently handed over the sponsorship cheque to the President of the Guyana Chess Federation Shiv Nandalall at the tournament’s venue after reaffirming their support to the development of chess.
