More than 250 persons representing several groups and organisations early Saturday morning cleared the seawall from the Kingston Bandstand to Camp Street of mounds of garbage in an activity organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment as part of the current Pick-it-Up Guyana programme.
The cleanup exercise was also supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a GINA press release said.
Wearing gloves and t-shirts supplied by Pick-it-up, the mostly young people filled dozens of large garbage bags with an assortment of garbage deposited along the seawall. Participants were also equipped with data cards and tasked with collecting data on the types and quantities of each type of waste collected. The data collected would be analysed to determine what kinds of waste finding its way into the sea and its origins. The data would also be used to inform decisions on suitable measures to reduce and stop littering on the seawall, the release said.
Groups participating in the exercise included Marian’s Academy, Guyana School of Agriculture, Graham’s Hall Green Ambassador’s Club, President’s Youth Award Group, PYO, University of Guyana – School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lions Club of D’Urban Park and Blazing Youth Group.
