A fish vendor was discovered dead by residents of East Canje, Berbice on the community’s main access road yesterday afternoon.
Dead is Sewdat Parvatan, 44, also known as ‘Bruk up’ of Lot 161 Cumberland, East Canje.
Residents only realized the man was dead around 2 pm. Although they had seen him at the spot since before noon, they thought that he was drunk and was drying out.
Parvatan’s brother Suresh “Sunil” Parvatan told Stabroek News that a friend had told the family he was lying on the road and it was suspected that he was dead.
According to Suresh, after he travelled to the scene, he identified the person as his brother and alerted police officers. Parvatan was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was transported by police. “… We did know he done dead because when we go there [the scene] he was stiff stiff,” said his brother.
A post mortem examination is expected to be performed today, his brother said.
It was understood that Parvatan had left home yesterday to go and pay off some debts. The money that he had left with was found on him, the brother said, adding that it was returned to the family.
Although Parvatan was described as an alcoholic, friends related that he appeared to be sober when they saw him.
He was described as a very quiet individual whenever he was sober.
Parvatan was that father of three teenage children and also leaves to mourn his four brothers, two sisters and his father.
